Best time to visit Kruger National Park

Use this page to pick your month based on the type of safari you want: crisp winter mornings with dry vegetation for easier sightings, or lush green scenery with young babies but more challenging game spotting.

Seasonal patterns

  • Dry season (May–September): thinner bush, cooler mornings, and generally easier game viewing.
  • Rainy season (October–April): lush landscapes, afternoon storms, beautiful light, and a more “summer safari” feel.

If you’re trying to avoid peak season, August and December are typically the busiest months.

Newborn animal season

  • If you'd like to see baby animals, lean toward October–February and plan slower, shorter drives rather than covering big distances.

Predator behavior

  • Predator activity is most reliable at first light and late afternoon, especially near water and along river roads.
  • In the dry months, visibility is better and it’s easier to spot tracks and movement along open verges.

Birding patterns

  • Summer usually brings more variety (migrants, breeding, and lots of activity after rain).
  • Winter can be excellent for raptors and long-distance scanning in open areas.

Our recommendation

  • For the best general game viewing, aim for June–September.
  • For greener scenery, birds, and summer thunderstorms, look at November–February.
  • For a balanced middle ground (good weather, good sightings and fewer crowds), March–May is often a sweet spot.
