Garden Route National Park

Stretching along South Africa's southern coast, Garden Route National Park weaves together lush forests, coastal cliffs, and rivers across a series of protected areas between Wilderness and Tsitsikamma. Unlike traditional wildlife parks, it's more about scenery, outdoor adventure, and biodiversity - from ancient yellowwood trees to tidal pools teeming with marine life.

Park Highlights

  • Storms River Mouth: Home to the famous suspension bridges spanning the river mouth, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and surrounding cliffs.
  • The Otter Trail: A world-renowned 5-day hiking trail along the rugged coastline, often ranked among the best hikes in the world.
  • Knysna Forest: One of the largest remaining indigenous forests in South Africa, with ancient yellowwood trees and rich birdlife.
  • Wilderness Section: A network of lakes, rivers, and estuaries perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and birdwatching.

Activities & Adventures

Hiking Trails

From short, family-friendly walks to challenging multi-day hikes, the park offers trails for all levels. The Dolphin Trail offers a more luxurious alternative to the Otter Trail, with comfortable accommodation and meals included.

Water Activities

Enjoy canoeing on the Touw River, swimming in natural rock pools, or taking a boat cruise to spot dolphins and whales (seasonal). The park's beaches are perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

Wildlife Viewing

While not a traditional Big Five destination, the park is home to smaller mammals like bushbuck, blue duiker, and the rare Knysna seahorse. Birdwatchers can spot over 300 bird species, including the Knysna loerie and African fish eagle.

Best Time to Visit

The park is a year-round destination, but the best time for outdoor activities is during the South African spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) when temperatures are mild. Summer (December to February) is perfect for beach activities, while winter (June to August) offers excellent whale watching opportunities.
