The Kruger National Park is 360km long and 65km wide, making it one of the largest parks in Africa. Below are a few driving routes that have become "favourites" for various reasons.

Southern Kruger

  • H4-1 (Skukuza to Lower Sabie): one of the most reliable roads for good game-viewing opportunities.
  • H4-2 (Lower Sabie to Crocodile Bridge): excellent for viewing predators at sunrise and sunset.
  • S28 (Crocodile Bridge side loops): Good for a quieter, short loop to be driven slowly.

Central Kruger

  • H7 (Orpen to Satara): great way to enter the park at Orpen gate and head to Satara camp for the night.
  • S100 (N'wanetsi area): one of Kruger’s most famous drives for large herds in an open, savannah landscape. High chance of seeing predators.
  • H1-3 / H1-4 roads: Well mainted roads for moving between camps in the central region.

Northern Kruger

  • H1-6 and H1-7 roads: key connection routes between Letaba, Shingwedzi, and Punda.
  • River-linked loops near northern camps: slower, scenic, lower-traffic routes.

Suggested camp plans

3-day first-timer

  • Camps: Lower Sabie or Skukuza
  • Routes: H4-1, H4-2, nearby short loops

5-day balanced itinerary

  • Camps: Skukuza -> Satara Routes: H4-1/H4-2 in south, S100 + H7 in central

7-day multi-zone itinerary

  • Camps: Berg-en-Dal/Skukuza -> Satara/Olifants -> Letaba/Shingwedzi Routes: H4-1/H4-2 in south, S100 + H7 in central, H1-6/H1-7 in north

Daily driving routine

  1. Morning: Leave your camp as the gates open at sunrise, aim for a short, slow drive near water/rivers. Take your coffee and rusks along with you in the car.
  2. Midday: relax at your camp pool or restaurant, or walk around the camp with your binoculars. There are always birds and other small creatures to observe in the camps.
  3. Afternoon: Levae your camp approximately 2-3 hours before gate closing time, don't aim for too much distance, enjoy a sundowner in your vehicle at a water source close to the camp.
